CLUB MISSION

The Diamondback Volleyball Club is dedicated to promoting the sport of volleyball and volleyball excellence in Las Cruces and the surrounding geographical area.

CLUB GOALS

The Diamondback Volleyball Club has an excellent record of producing players who have gone on to college teams. It is through club volleyball that most players who eventually play in college have the opportunity to be seen by college coaches. Travel to national tournaments, which is a major part of our club activities, provides this type of exposure.

IS CLUB FOR YOU?

Club volleyball is the way that the majority of college level players have gotten their most valuable coaching and playing experience. College players overwhelmingly credit their club experience as the key factor in their recruitment. In the Las Cruces area one only needs to look at the varsity high school players to find a significant Diamondback presence. Playing club volleyball in the older age groups and on traveling teams requires a sincere commitment on the part of the player and her family.

Payments to coaches, gym space rental and entering and traveling to national and regional tournaments accounts for the majority of the expense of club volleyball. The cost to the player for our club varies greatly with the older more competitive teams having higher travel and tournament costs.

PLAYER SELECTION

Each year there is a player selection and clinic session used to place players on teams that will be the best possible match for their age and skill level. The coaching staff also can exercise their prerogative to invite players to participate where it is in the best interest of the player and the club. The player selection clinic has a nominal charge to cover the cost of the session and other club expenses. Depending on the number of teams and potential players, it is possible that players will not make a team.

RELATIONSHIP TO HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS

The club does accommodate players who are interested in dual participation and understands that participation in high school competitions must come first. At the same time, these players are expected to come to practices. In some cases players are restricted by their high school coaches from actively participating in these practices, however, observation of practice is still expected in order to familiarize the player with the offensive and defensive systems used by the club.

SPORTSMANSHIP

Everyone, including our Diamondback VBC coaches, wants to win, and we want our players to end up becoming the best players possible. But these are not our sole objectives. An equally important objective is to teach good sportsmanship by developing the qualities of teamwork, self-control, personal effort, respect for others, and to have fun doing it.

Volleyball is a team sport. Each player is a unique part of a team sport where each team is limited to only three momentary "rebounding" contacts at a time. At all levels of volleyball, virtually every play ends with an error, even though no one is trying to make a mistake (in fact they are trying to NOT make mistakes). Team and individual performances will improve if you realize that volleyball is a game of errors; to win, your team must either force the other team to make more, or your team has to make less.

Errors should be approached with the attitude that they happened, the game goes on and with each new play it is time to forget the errors and look ahead to how the next ball can be better played. Our goal is simply to have everyone playing their individual best in every rally no matter what the outcome.

Volleyball can teach many good traits, like self-discipline, the ability to cooperate, regard for physical fitness, respect for authority, and tolerance of others. But it is difficult for these and other desirable traits to take root if the adults around these young players fail to set the right examples. Each coach has their individual style of coaching; thus, each player and parent should follow that coach's instructions. We ask the parents to refrain from criticizing opposing players and coaches, or a teammate of your child. Please let the players play the ball to the best of their ability and leave the coaching to the coach.

The referees are also human. Every contact by each team must be judged. While an official's decision may not be agreeable to all involved, his/her decision is final. No useful purpose is served by shouting at the referee. Teams can receive warnings, even penalties for such actions. Above all, we want our players to learn that their individual performance is their own responsibility, not that of the referees or other players.

While players and coaches need positive attitudes and behavior from parents, this certainly is not meant to lessen spectator enthusiasm. We want our parents to come and watch and to be involved. Pleases cheer, jump up and down, and encourage the good plays and other things you like. Also, please try to ignore the mistakes you will (by definitions and rules of the game) surely see.

Questions or concerns should be discussed privately with the appropriate person at the appropriate time.

Thanks to the Meto Volleyball Club for this message of sportsmanship found on their web site

UNIFORMS AND EQUIPMENT

Each player will be issued uniforms at the beginning of each season; the cost is included in the membership fee. The uniform must be worn whenever representing Diamondback VBC at a sanctioned tournament.

Proper care of the uniforms is each player's responsibility. Parents are asked to review and follow the care instructions on the labels for the shirts, shorts, and bag. Players will need to supply their own spandex shorts, shoes and kneepads. For practices and scrimmages players also need their own workout clothes, e.g. T-shirt, etc. Jewelry, watches, or other such objects, including hard casts or splints, are not allowed in the interest of preventing cuts and injury not only for self but for others. Additionally, street shoes are prohibited on court floors.

PLAYING TIME

Playing time is not guaranteed. It is a privilege and not a right. However, it is usually in the best interests of the team for everyone to receive an earned amount of playing time. Every effort by the coaches and club directors will be made to ensure appropriate playing time for all participants on all teams. If you have questions about playing time feel free to ask the coach.

CURFEW AT TOURNAMENTS

When teams stay overnight at a Hotel, every player must adhere to the hours set for each club team. These hours may vary by age group, arrival time and playing time. However, it is critical that players get sufficient rest to assure optimum performance. Many tournaments are won and lost through late night chat sessions. Generally, in the room by 10:00 AM and lights out at 11:00 AM is the expectation. For later play (i.e.., Afternoon) lights out may be extended by an hour to midnight. Tournament play generally requires a quick start on day one in order to finish well and a lack of discipline regarding curfew or late arrival at the playing site can quickly dash tournament hopes.

The 10:00 PM in your room curfew is always in effect for the consideration of other hotel guests. We visit many of the same sites every year, and we wish to be welcome back to the nicer accommodations.

REFEREEING DUTIES AND LINE JUDGING

In many tournaments, teams must stay and ref/line-judge after they have played their last match. When this happens, no player on the team may leave early unless pre-approved by the coach. In order to properly carry out referee and score-keeping duties players are expected to attend the clinics offered by the club. It is important that these duties are taken seriously and done well.

PLAYER STANDARDS OF CONDUCT

PRACTICE RULES

Players are required to be ready to begin practice at the designated start time.

If a player must miss a practice, a telephone call to their respective coach is mandatory at least one hour before practice. If their coach cannot be reached, there should be a message on Mike Jordan's Voice Mail.

Advance notice is mandatory if a player cannot make a practice or tournament due to vacation, family commitment, etc. A written note is required for these absences. Each player needs to produce an individual note for their anticipated absence signed by a parent.

Players need to make every effort to be at every practice so they don't miss too much instruction that could affect their performance at tournaments. Also, coaches prepare practice plans according to who and how many are attending. They need to know in advance if someone will have to miss a practice.

We will jog at all times during practice, especially when shagging, we will always call the ball, when your teammates are getting tired, encourage them, and respect the decisions made by the coaching staff. If you have any questions, see your respective coach.
